USGS Geography Publications
This picture shows how over time the amount of data has grown as more areas have been mapped for longer periods and for higher resolutions. The "envelope" marking the limits of these data has therefore grown larger, so that a major challenge today is managing (and not simply producing) vast amounts of spatial data to reveal new and complex phenomena.
